Where to Fish in November: Cooler Water, Hungry Fish

November is one of the best months of the year to be on the water, and one of the most overlooked. The crowds are gone, the water is cooling, and many fish are feeding hard before winter.

What the fish are doing

As water temperatures fall, baitfish bunch up and the predators follow them. Fish that spent summer spread across a lake often group in a few spots: deeper points, channel edges, creek mouths and the edges of weed lines that have not died off yet.

How to adjust

Slow down. Cold-blooded fish move less as the water cools. A slower retrieve, a smaller bait and longer pauses usually draw more bites than a fast presentation.

Fish deeper structure on sunny afternoons. A string of sunny days warms shallow water a little, and the afternoon is often the best window. Start on deeper structure near the shallows and work toward the bank.

Match the bait to the water. In clear, cold water, natural colors and smaller profiles tend to work. Live bait from a local shop is hard to beat this time of year.

Dress for it

November cold is harder on you than on the fish. Dress in layers, bring a warm hat and gloves, and keep a dry change of clothes in the truck. Cold water is dangerous, so wear a life jacket every time you are in a boat. Always wear a life jacket, carry the safety equipment your boat requires, and check the weather before you go.

Find your water

Pick your state on MaxCreel.com and open any lake or river page for boat launches, bait shops and creel limits. For what is in season month by month, see the Guides.

Creel limits, seasons and rules change, and the state's current rules always control. Check your state's wildlife agency before you fish.
